The hottest ‘hoods in town
As we put a cap on 2015, Eater surveyed a group of friends, writers, and all around experts for their take on the past year. We asked them eight questions: from Top Standbys to Top Newcomers, from Best Meals to Restaurants Broken Up With. All will be answered by the time we turn off the lights at the end of the 2015. Responses are related in no particular order; all are cut, pasted, and (mostly) unedited herein. Readers, please do add your survey answers in the comments.
Jackie Gutierrez-Jones (UrbanDaddy Miami): I have this love/hate thing with South Beach (let’s not even talk about this whole $4/hour parking debacle), but damn if they don’t consistently churn out some fine dining establishments. I just can’t quit you, SoBe.
Carla Torres (Ocean Drive): Wynwood/midtown represent. Alter, GK Bistronomie, and Proof are all edible proof (see what I did there?).
David Rosendorf (Food For Thought Miami): I won’t necessarily say “best” quite yet, but I’m excited by what’s happening in the Upper Eastside / MiMo District: Vagabond, the reopening of Cena by Michy, Ironside Pizza, Cake Thai Kitchen, Loba, Ms. Cheezious, 50 Eggs headquarters, along with Blue Collar, The Federal, Bar Meli, Mina’s Mediterraneo, plus upcoming openings of Phuc Yea!, Paulie Gee’s, and Bar Lab taking over Magnum.
Andrea Becerra (The Hungry Post): MIMO. We applaud you.
Ashley Brozic (Racked Miami Editor/Eater Miami Contributor): South Beach continues to carry the torch.
Laine Doss (Miami New Times): MiMo District — There’s something about the blend of gorgeous architecture and interesting restaurants that’s compelling. I predict that the neighborhood will grow and expand, with 79th Street becoming a mecca for inexpensive, quirky, and culturally diverse eateries and drinking establishments.
Giovanny Gutierrez (Chat Chow TV/Eater Miami Contributor): Once again, Miami Beach takes the cake w/ opening of Byblos Mediterranean dishes, beautiful Continental, loving everything at Talde, Pirolo stepping out of his shell at Bází, Izzy’s seafood brunch, Red Ginger and their Japanese Whiskey selections and Pubbelly’s makeover as it celebrates its 5th year.
Matthew Meltzer (Thrillist Miami): North-South Beach. Which if you take it literally I guess would just be “Beach,” but this year they opened three Mediterranean restaurants on pretty much the same corner at 17th and Collins, which might be the most Miami restaurant move of the year. Plus added Continental, Beachcraft. Driftwod Room and 27 to an area that already had Cleo, Sylvano’s and Block’s Pizza, which if you haven’t had it is the best slice on the beach.
