The highly anticipated Faena Hotel officially opened its doors to guests on Monday after a high-profile preview period that commenced with Art Basel. The 169-room hotel, a sort of visual fantasia in gold, red and leopard print dusted with contemporary art, was conceived by Argentinian developer Alan Faena along with creative consultants filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and his costume and set designer wife Catherine Martin (at every turn you feel like you’ve stepped inside the set of Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby or Romeo + Juliet). The hotel, along with a neighboring residential tower and the boutique hotel Casa Claridge, are the first properties to open in the ambitious forthcoming Faena District stretching between 32nd and 36th Streets on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The six block, eight building project is slated for completion in the fall of 2016 with the addition of a cultural arts forum, shopping bazaar and more residential towers.
So what else is on the horizon for Miami’s hotel scene in 2016? As is so often the case, many of these hotels (The Langford, EAST, Playa Largo) have been on our radar for quite a while with the promise of opening in 2015. With the New Year just 10 short days away, they’ve missed the deadline on their original resolution. But new opening dates have been projected and this is the latest crop of hotels with promises to open in 2016, listed in chronological order.
