From bling to budget, the Magic City’s new hotel scene is booming. Ianthe Butt checks in
1. The Langford Hotel
Old Miami meets new Miami at The Langford in Downtown. The hotel will open in former Miami National Bank, a building that retains its original beaux arts style. Inside you’ll find designer touches by Bloom Miami, works by local artists, and a new American craft eatery, PB Station, from the PubbellyBoys — the team behind a slew of hit restaurant concepts Stateside. Opening winter 2015.
Rooms from £110 a night
2. EAST Miami
Miami’s Brickell district is undergoing dramatic redevelopment and EAST Miami — along with a luxury shopping centre, residential and office towers – lies at its heart. The first US opening from heavyweight hotelier Swire Hotels will have 352 bedrooms, including 89 residences designed for long-term stays, with interiors by NYC-based Clodagh Design. Opening winter 2015.
Rooms from £160 a night
3. Metropolitan by COMO
Italian designer Paola Navone has injected this 1930s building in Mid Beach with more than a touch of class. There are hints of vintage-postcard Miami in pastel hues, scalloped Art Deco architectural details brought up to the now with a glamorous rooftop terrace complete with whirlpool. The small spa is as sleek as you’d expect from COMO, and was the first to premiere the range of treatments from cult beauty brand Dr. Hauschka. Opened March 2014.
BA offers three nights from £799 pp, travelling 11 January–28 February including return flights from London Heathrow and accommodation. Book by 15 December. Visit ba.com/Miami
4. The Vagabond Hotel
Formerly The Vagabond Motel, this icon of the Miami Modern (MiMo) district opened in 1953 offering affordable drive-in lodgings. Fast forward to 2015 and after a near-decade closure it has reopened after a multimillion-dollar facelift. Some things have stayed the same – the original neon sign, the fact that rooms are still a steal, but it’s upped its sartorial game with bright, tropical design by Stephan Dupoux, a casual seafood diner and pool patio. Opened August 2014.
Rooms from £110 a night
5. Hotel Croydon
Another new addition to Mid Beach, Hotel Croydon delivers vintage style with modern comforts and has already proved a hit with sophisticated urbanites. There’s a rooftop deck with 360-degree views, The Tavern restaurant with complimentary cocktails (for hotel guests from 7-8pm), and in-house concept store Wanderlista which stocks curated vintage finds and covetable travel items. Opened August 2014.
Rooms from £162 a night
6. Nobu Hotel, Eden Roc Miami Beach
Following the success of the Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace, Eden Roc’s glitzy Miami Beach hotel will repeat the ‘hotel within a hotel’ concept with the opening of a Nobu Hotel at Eden Roc Miami. Masterminded by Robert DeNiro and Hollywood producer Meir Teper, the property will have 210 show-stopping guest rooms and be home to the world’s largest Nobu restaurant. Opening spring 2016.
